Clontarf Castle is one of Dublin’s most popular wedding venues, and with good reason. A 12th-century castle just 15 minutes from the city centre, it blends medieval atmosphere with modern luxury in a way that few venues can match. One of the things I love about Clontarf Castle is the variety of portrait locations within a short walk.

The Castle Exterior

The front facade of Clontarf Castle is imposing and beautiful, the stone tower, the arched entrance, and the manicured grounds framing the building. It’s a natural spot for a few formal portraits that say “we got married in a castle” without needing to pose stiffly.

The exterior is particularly stunning at night when the castle is lit up. If your reception runs into the evening, stepping outside for a few blue-hour portraits with the illuminated castle behind you is always worth it.

The Castle Grounds

The gardens and grounds surrounding the castle offer a softer, more natural backdrop. Mature trees, stone walls, and hedged walkways create pockets of privacy, perfect for intimate couple portraits between the ceremony and reception.

The Courtyard

The inner courtyard has a lovely, enclosed feel. The stone walls and warm textures make it a reliable portrait spot whatever the weather, sheltered from wind and rain while still feeling like an outdoor space.

Clontarf Promenade and Bull Island

Just a few minutes’ walk from the castle, Clontarf Promenade opens up to panoramic views of Dublin Bay. The wooden bridge to Bull Island is one of my favourite spots, it gives you sea, sky, and sand all at once. On a clear day, you can see Howth Head across the bay.

This is optional, it depends on your timeline, but if you have 20 minutes to spare, the coastal portraits you get here are something you simply can’t replicate inside any venue.

The Reception

Clontarf Castle’s reception spaces are versatile and atmospheric. The medieval-themed interiors, stone walls, suits of armour, dramatic lighting, create a sense of occasion that photographs beautifully.

For documentary wedding photography, receptions are where the magic really happens. The speeches that make everyone cry, the first dance, the dance floor at midnight, the quiet moments between the big ones, a venue with atmosphere like Clontarf Castle elevates all of these moments.

Many couples choose to get ready at the castle itself or at a nearby hotel. The bridal suites are well-appointed and have good natural light for getting-ready photos.

Ceremony

Allow your guests time to settle in and enjoy the castle before the ceremony. The Great Hall sets the scene perfectly.

After the Ceremony: Drinks Reception & Portraits

While your guests enjoy drinks and canapés, this is the ideal time for couple and family portraits. A typical portrait session takes 30–45 minutes. The castle grounds, courtyard, and exterior give you plenty of variety without going far.

Optional: Coastal Portraits

If your timeline allows, a quick trip to Clontarf Promenade (literally 3 minutes away) gives you a completely different backdrop. I’d recommend this for couples who love the idea of mixing castle grandeur with natural, windswept coastal shots.

Evening: Reception and Beyond

The reception rooms at Clontarf Castle come alive in the evening. The candlelight and atmospheric lighting make for stunning documentary coverage of speeches, dinner, and dancing.

Best Time of Year for a Clontarf Castle Wedding

Clontarf Castle works beautifully in every season:

  • Summer: Long evenings mean golden light during dinner and the option for late-evening portraits outside
  • Autumn: The trees in the grounds turn golden, and the castle exterior looks stunning against dramatic skies
  • Winter: The medieval interiors come into their own, roaring fires, candlelight, and a cosy, intimate atmosphere. Winter weddings here are incredibly romantic
  • Spring: Fresh green grounds and blossom around the castle. The promenade is lively and bright
