- Traditional / Classical More structured, with formal group shots and posed portraits. If having a perfectly arranged family photo in front of the church is important to you, look for someone who specialises in this.
- Fine Art Highly stylised, editorial-looking images with creative composition and dramatic editing. Beautiful, but the results can feel less “real.”
- Light and Airy Bright, soft, pastel-toned images with a dreamy quality. Very popular on Instagram.
- Dark and Moody Rich, deep tones with dramatic shadows. Atmospheric and emotional.
No style is better than another it’s about what resonates with you. Look at photographers’ full galleries (not just their highlights reel) and ask yourself: do these photos make me feel something?
Look at Full Weddings, Not Just Portfolios
Every photographer’s website shows their best 20 images. That’s normal. But what you really want to see is a full wedding gallery start to finish.
Why? Because a full gallery shows you:
- How they handle different lighting conditions (bright church vs. dim reception)
- Whether they capture the small details as well as the big moments
- How consistent their editing style is across hundreds of images
- Whether the candid, in-between moments look as good as the highlights
Ask any photographer you’re considering to share 1-2 complete wedding galleries. If they won’t, that’s a red flag.

Check for Experience at Your Venue
Ireland has a huge variety of wedding venues from intimate country houses to grand city hotels, coastal cliffs to rustic barns. Each presents different challenges for a photographer.
If you’ve already chosen your venue, ask whether the photographer has shot there before. A photographer who knows a venue will know:
- Where the best light falls at different times of day
- The most flattering spots for portraits
- How to work with the venue’s layout for group shots
- Any restrictions on flash, positioning, or access
Experience at your venue isn’t essential, but it’s a genuine advantage.

- How many images will we receive? Expect 400–800 for full-day coverage.
- When will we get them? Typical turnaround in Ireland is 6–12 weeks. Anything over 16 weeks is worth questioning.
- Do we get full resolution files? You should. Make sure there are no restrictions on printing.
- Do you offer albums? A well-made album is worth considering, ask to see samples.
About the Business
- Are you insured? Professional indemnity and public liability insurance are essential. Ask for proof if you want peace of mind.
- What’s in the contract? Read it. Make sure it covers cancellation terms, rescheduling, and copyright/usage rights.
- What’s your payment structure? Most photographers require a booking deposit with the balance due before the wedding.
Red Flags to Watch For
Over the years, I’ve heard stories from couples who had bad experiences. Here’s what to watch out for:
- No contract Walk away. A contract protects both of you.
- No insurance If something goes wrong at the venue, you could be liable.
- Won’t share full galleries They may be hiding inconsistency.
- Prices that seem too good to be true They usually are. Extremely cheap photographers may be unreliable, underdelivering, or cutting corners on editing.
- Poor communication If they take weeks to reply before the wedding, imagine how long you’ll wait for your photos.
- Pushy sales tactics A good photographer doesn’t need to pressure you. They let their work speak.
Trust Your Gut
This might be the most important advice: you need to actually like your photographer. They’ll be with you for the most intimate, emotional moments of your day. If the connection doesn’t feel right, if you feel awkward, rushed, or like just another booking, keep looking.

Popular wedding photographers in Ireland especially for summer Saturdays, book out 12-18 months in advance. If your date is flexible, you’ll have more options. But if you’ve set a date, don’t wait.
A general timeline:
- 12-18 months before: Start looking and reach out to your favourites
- 10-12 months before: Book and pay your deposit
- 3-6 months before: Pre-wedding meeting to plan the timeline
- 1 month before: Final check-in to confirm details
