One of the most common questions I get from newly engaged couples is: “Is it too early to book a photographer?” The answer is almost always no. In fact, the more common problem is leaving it too late.

Here’s an honest guide to timing.

The Short Answer

For summer Saturdays (June, July, August), 12–18 months in advance is not unusual. Sought-after photographers in Ireland get fully booked for peak dates well over a year ahead.

For off-peak dates, midweek, winter months, spring, 6–9 months is usually comfortable, though earlier is always better.

Why Photographers Book Up So Early

Wedding photography is a single-supplier service. Unlike catering or flowers, there is no way to scale, I can only photograph one wedding per day. Every date I say yes to is a date I say no to everyone else for.

Peak wedding season in Ireland runs from late April through September, with June, July, and August being the busiest months. Saturday dates in these months, the most popular choice, fill up fast, particularly for photographers who have been recommended or who have built a visible portfolio.

Does Booking Early Lock You In?

A professional photographer will take a deposit (typically 20–30% of the total fee) to secure your date, with the balance due closer to the wedding. If your circumstances change, a postponement, a venue change, anything, a good contract will outline the options clearly.

Booking early doesn’t mean paying everything upfront. It means your date is protected.

What If You’re Planning a Short-Engagement Wedding?

Short engagements (less than 6 months) are more common than people think, and they’re absolutely manageable. The honest truth is that your options narrow, some photographers will already be booked, particularly for popular summer dates. But good photographers do become available due to cancellations, and some specifically keep their calendar more flexible.

If you’re planning quickly: be decisive, move fast when you find someone you like, and don’t spend weeks deliberating while your date slips away.

A Note on Budget and Timing

There’s a connection between budget and booking lead time that’s worth understanding. The most affordable photographers in any market tend to book up earliest, they’re often newer to the profession, building their portfolio, and operating on lower margins that attract high demand.

Mid-range and premium photographers often have slightly more availability, because the higher fee filters the enquiries to serious, committed couples rather than everyone who’s casually browsing.

If budget is a primary consideration for you, booking 12–18 months out gives you the best chance of securing someone whose work you love before they’re fully booked.

The Golden Rule

Book your photographer before your venue, if you can. Your venue gives you a date and a location. Your photographer gives you the lasting record of everything that happens there. If you have to choose between securing your dream photographer on a slightly less-ideal date and securing your dream venue with whoever’s available, most couples who have gone through the process say the photographer matters more.
