Hodson Bay Hotel sits on the eastern shore of Lough Ree just outside Athlone, and its relationship with the lake defines everything about the photography here. The lakeside terrace and garden, The most immediately distinctive feature. The terrace extends towards the water, and the hotel’s gardens meet the lough at a boundary that’s been thoughtfully designed for events. The combination of manicured garden and wild lakeshore gives a natural transition between formal and atmospheric portrait settings.
The lough shore, Access to Lough Ree’s shore directly from the hotel grounds is Hodson Bay’s greatest photographic asset. The water, the islands, the horizon, standing at the water’s edge with Lough Ree spreading west, the scale and quietness of the midlands landscape becomes genuinely beautiful.

How the Day Typically Flows
At Hodson Bay, I structure the day around the light on the lake. The morning photography, getting ready, the bridal suite, the detail shots, happens inside with the lake as a backdrop where possible. The ceremony and formal elements proceed in the function spaces. Then, as the afternoon moves towards evening, the lakeside comes into its own.
The western aspect of Lough Ree means the light improves through the afternoon and reaches its best in the hour before sunset. Couple portraits here work best in this window, the lake lit from behind the couple, the islands in the middle distance, the warm midlands sky above. It’s a combination that consistently produces the kind of images couples didn’t know they were going to love.
Athlone as a Wedding Destination
Hodson Bay’s proximity to Athlone town (about 5 minutes by car) gives an additional portrait option that many couples underuse. Athlone is a genuinely characterful midlands town, the castle on the Shannon, the Left Bank quarter with its independent restaurants and narrow streets, the river itself with its bridges and views. A brief portrait drive into town adds a completely different visual register to the gallery.
