I’m going to say something you might not expect from a wedding photographer: if your budget allows it, book a videographer.

I’ve spent years telling couples that photography is the one thing from your wedding that lasts. I still believe that. But having recently launched videography alongside our photography at Duffymog Studios, I’ve seen firsthand what video adds to the picture, and it’s changed how I think about documenting a wedding day.

This isn’t a hard sell. Not every couple needs a wedding video, and I’ll be honest about that too. But if you’re on the fence, here are seven reasons why couples almost never regret booking one.

Wedding guests on the dancefloor, atmosphere and energy that only video can fully capture

1. It Captures What Photographs Cannot

I love photography. I’ve built my career on it. But a photograph is a single frozen moment, and there are parts of a wedding day that exist in sound, in movement, in time.

The crack in your dad’s voice during his speech. The way your partner laughed nervously halfway through their vows. The exact moment the room erupted when the band kicked in. These are things you experienced once, in real time, and then they were gone.

A photograph of your dad speaking at the microphone is beautiful. But hearing his actual voice, the pauses, the emotion, the joke that landed perfectly, that’s something else entirely. Video holds onto the things that photographs, by their nature, cannot.

2. You Won’t Remember Your Own Ceremony

This catches couples off guard, but it’s almost universal. You will not remember large parts of your ceremony.

The nerves, the emotion, the adrenaline, it all combines to create a kind of beautiful blur. Couples tell me this all the time: “I know it happened, but I can’t actually remember what we said.” Your celebrant’s words, your own vows, the readings your sister spent weeks choosing, these moments deserve to exist beyond your imperfect memory of them.

A ceremony edit gives you the whole thing back. Every word, every look, every reaction from the people sitting in those seats. It’s the single most valuable piece of footage from any wedding day, and it’s the one most couples wish they had.

3. The Speeches Deserve to Be Heard Again

I’ve photographed enough weddings to know that the speeches are where the real emotional weight of the day lands. The best man’s story that had the room in tears of laughter. Your mum’s quiet, devastating sincerity. The friend who somehow said exactly the right thing.

Photographs capture the reactions. Video captures the words.

And here’s the thing: you won’t be able to fully take in the speeches on the day. You’ll be overwhelmed, emotional, distracted by a hundred other things. Watching them back a few weeks later, in the quiet of your own home, is when they really hit. Many couples tell me the speeches edit is the part of their wedding film they return to most often.

4. Family Who Couldn’t Be There Can Experience It

Not everyone who matters can make it to your wedding. Grandparents whose health won’t allow the travel. Friends living abroad who couldn’t get the time off. Family members who are no longer with you by the time the day comes around.

A wedding film lets the people who couldn’t be in the room experience it almost as if they were. Not just see photographs of it, but hear the ceremony, watch the speeches, feel the atmosphere. I’ve had couples tell me their grandmother watched the highlight film on repeat for weeks. That kind of connection across distance is something a photo gallery, wonderful as it is, can’t quite achieve.

5. It’s the Most Common Wedding Regret

If you ask married couples what they’d do differently, one answer comes up more consistently than almost any other: “I wish we’d booked a videographer.”

Not “I wish we’d spent more on flowers.” Not “I wish we’d upgraded the dessert table.” The regret that sticks is not having a video of the day.

I hear this from couples I photographed years ago. They love their photos, genuinely love them, but they wish they could hear the vows again. They wish they could watch the first dance. They wish they had their dad’s speech on film. It’s the one wedding decision you can’t go back and fix. On the day, you make the call, and it’s permanent.

I don’t say this to create pressure. I say it because it’s true, and because if you’re considering it now, you still have the chance to make a different choice.

6. It Becomes More Valuable Over Time

Your wedding photos will always be treasured. But something interesting happens with wedding videos over the years: they gain emotional weight.

In the first few months, you watch the highlight film and relive the excitement. A few years later, you notice things you missed, the way your partner looked at you during the vows, the expression on your mum’s face, a guest in the background wiping away tears.

And then more time passes. People change. Voices change. Faces change. The video becomes a window into a specific moment in time that no longer exists, and its value only grows. The speeches from people who are no longer around. The sound of laughter from friends you’ve lost touch with. Your own younger selves, making promises to each other.

A wedding video is one of the few things in life that becomes more precious the older it gets.

7. Your Children Will Watch It Someday

This is the one that gets people, and it should.

Imagine showing your children what your wedding day actually looked and sounded like. Not just photographs, which are wonderful, but the actual event. Your voices. Your faces. The music, the room, the people who were there. Your children seeing their grandparents younger. Hearing the way you spoke to each other. Understanding, in a visceral way, the day their family began.

That’s not sentimental fluff. That’s a genuine family treasure. And it’s something that only video can provide.

A Photographer’s Honest Perspective

I want to be straightforward about something. I’ve been a wedding photographer for years, and I’ve only recently added videography. You might wonder if I’m pushing video because it’s a new revenue stream.

Here’s the truth: I added videography because I kept watching couples miss out on it and regret it later. I kept hearing “I wish we’d had a video” from couples whose photo galleries they adored. And I kept seeing moments at weddings, the speeches, the laughter, the vows, that I knew my photographs, no matter how good, couldn’t fully hold.

I still believe photography is essential. If you can only afford one, choose photography. A strong set of wedding photographs is irreplaceable, and it’s the foundation of how your day will be remembered.

But if your budget has room for both, video is the addition you’re most likely to be grateful for in five, ten, twenty years’ time.
