Wicklow is known as the Garden of Ireland for good reason, and as a wedding photographer Wicklow is one of the counties I shoot in most frequently. The landscape here shifts dramatically within short distances, from the purple-heathered peaks of the Wicklow Mountains to the sheltered oak woodlands of the Vale of Avoca, from the wide shingle beach at Brittas Bay to the monastic stillness of Glendalough. For couples who want their wedding photographs to feel rooted in the Irish landscape, there is nowhere better.
Top Wedding Venues in Wicklow
Powerscourt Estate, The 47-acre gardens at Powerscourt are among the finest in Europe, designed in the 18th century with the Great Sugarloaf Mountain as a natural backdrop. The Italian Garden, the Japanese Garden, and the Triton Lake all offer distinct portrait settings within a short walk. The Powerscourt Hotel next door provides a luxurious reception space, but it is the estate gardens that make this venue truly exceptional for photography.
Tinakilly Country House, Captain Robert Halpin’s Victorian Italianate mansion sits on seven acres of mature gardens overlooking the Irish Sea near Rathnew. The interiors are full of period detail, ornate fireplaces, a sweeping staircase, stained glass, while the grounds offer everything from a walled garden to a wild coastal path. The sea-facing terrace catches evening light beautifully.
Brooklodge & Macreddin Village, Tucked into the Macreddin Valley near Aughrim, Brooklodge offers a self-contained village setting surrounded by hills. The on-site chapel, The Sanctuary, is a striking modern space with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out onto woodland. For portraits, the surrounding valley provides the kind of moody, layered mountain backdrop that defines Wicklow.
Clone House, A restored Georgian country house near Aughrim that accommodates exclusive-use weddings. The interiors are pared-back and elegant, with whitewashed walls and original floorboards that photograph cleanly. The surrounding farmland and ancient oak trees offer a rustic, unspoiled setting.
Rathsallagh House, A converted Queen Anne stable block set on 530 acres of parkland near Dunlavin on the Wicklow-Kildare border. The walled garden, golf course, and mature tree-lined avenues give enormous variety for portraits without ever leaving the grounds.
Why Wicklow for Your Wedding?
The defining quality of Wicklow wedding photography is depth. The county’s terrain provides layered, textured backdrops, mountains behind forests behind rivers, that give photographs a sense of scale and drama without needing any post-production trickery. The Wicklow Mountains National Park covers over 20,000 hectares, and the light here changes constantly as clouds move across the peaks, creating moody, atmospheric conditions that suit documentary wedding photography perfectly.
Wicklow also benefits from remarkable ecological variety. The ancient oakwoods around Glendalough and the Vale of Clara are some of the oldest native woodlands left in Ireland, and the filtered, dappled light under their canopy is ideal for portraits. By contrast, the open moorland around Sally Gap and the Military Road offers vast, cinematic horizons that make for powerful wide-angle shots.
The county’s proximity to Dublin means your guests can get here easily, but the moment they arrive, they feel completely removed from the city. That transition, from urban to wild in under an hour, gives Wicklow weddings a particular magic.
What to Expect from Your Wicklow Wedding Photographer
Wicklow is my most-visited county outside Dublin, and the journey from my base to most Wicklow venues takes between 45 minutes and an hour and a half depending on whether you are in north Wicklow (Enniskerry, Greystones) or the deep south (Arklow, Aughrim). Travel is included in my standard packages for all Wicklow venues.
Weather in the Wicklow Mountains is noticeably more changeable than on the coast or in Dublin, temperatures drop, rain showers blow in fast, and mist can settle on the peaks without warning. I always scout backup locations at each venue and carry weather-sealed gear. That said, some of the most beautiful Wicklow wedding photographs I have ever taken were in soft rain with mist hanging in the valley, it is atmospheric rather than a problem.
For golden hour, Wicklow’s valleys and mountains create interesting light patterns. West-facing valleys like Glenmalure get spectacular sunset light, while east-facing coastal venues benefit from soft, warm morning light. I will advise on the best portrait timing based on your specific venue and time of year.
