Ballyfin Demesne, A Regency masterpiece set on 614 acres of parkland, Ballyfin is in a class of its own. The house was painstakingly restored and reopened in 2011, and every room is furnished with museum-quality antiques, gilded mirrors, and hand-painted wallpapers. The grounds include a lake, a walled garden, a tower folly, and a grotto carved into the hillside. Photographing at Ballyfin is an extraordinary experience, the interiors offer Old Master lighting conditions, and the estate grounds provide an almost infinite variety of portrait settings. It is exclusive-use only, meaning the entire property is yours for the weekend.
The Heritage Golf & Spa Resort, Killenard, A modern resort set in the rolling countryside south of Portlaoise. The Heritage offers manicured grounds, a championship golf course, and a bright, contemporary function room. The grounds are well kept and offer clean, open backdrops, while the surrounding farmland, with its hedgerows, stone walls, and ancient trees, provides a more textured alternative for couples who want a rural feel.
Castle Durrow, Just across the county border into Laois territory, Castle Durrow is a restored 18th-century Palladian mansion surrounded by mature parkland. The entrance hall with its sweeping staircase photographs beautifully, and the walled garden, one of the largest in Ireland, offers an intimate, enclosed setting for ceremonies and portraits alike.
Roundwood House, Mountrath, A Palladian villa dating from the 1740s, Roundwood is small, personal, and full of character. The house accommodates intimate weddings of up to about fifty guests, and its informality is its charm. The surrounding gardens and woodland walks provide portrait locations with an old-world feel that suits Laois wedding photography perfectly.

The county’s farmland, gently undulating fields divided by mature hedgerows, dotted with ruined tower houses and ancient churchyards, creates a backdrop that is quintessentially Irish without being a cliché. The Slieve Bloom Mountains form Laois’s western border, and their forested slopes and open moorland add a wilder dimension. The Glenbarrow waterfall trail, which follows a river through oak woodland to a series of cascades, is one of the most photogenic spots in the Midlands and a wonderful option for adventurous pre-wedding shoots.
Portlaoise and the surrounding towns are unpretentious and welcoming. There is a practicality to choosing Laois, guests arriving from Dublin, Cork, Limerick, and Galway can all reach it within ninety minutes, making it a genuinely central option for couples drawing from different parts of the country.
Where to Take Portraits in Laois
Ballyfin and Castle Durrow have enough inside their own walls that leaving would be perverse. For everywhere else in the county, these are the places worth the short drive.
Emo Court. A domed neoclassical house by James Gandon, the architect of the Custom House, set at the end of a mile-long avenue of giant sequoias, with a lake walk through the woods behind it. The parkland and lakeside are OPW land and open to walk in, and it is about fifteen minutes from Killenard and twenty from Portlaoise. The avenue in autumn is the single best backdrop in the county. The house interior is a separate, ticketed guided tour, so plan around the grounds rather than the rooms.
Heywood Gardens, Ballinakill. Formal gardens laid out by Edwin Lutyens with planting attributed to Gertrude Jekyll, including a sunken Italian garden with an oval pool and a terrace looking out over the countryside. Free to walk into, rarely busy, and architectural in a way that very little else in the Midlands is. Excellent for a small group as well as the two of you.
The Rock of Dunamase. A ruined castle on a rock outcrop a few minutes east of Portlaoise, with the plains of Laois falling away on every side. It is a short, steep climb over uneven ground, so it suits a couple in flat shoes and a bit of a sense of humour rather than a full wedding party. Worth it for the view.
Timahoe Round Tower. A twelfth century round tower with an unusually ornate Romanesque doorway, standing on a village green with almost nobody around. Simple, graphic and quick.
Glenbarrow, Slieve Bloom. A river trail through oak woodland to a run of waterfalls, west of Rosenallis. Too far and too rough underfoot for most wedding days, but the best option in the county for an engagement shoot the weekend before.
Durrow. The village green, the estate gates and the avenue at Castle Durrow give you a tidy, self-contained set of backdrops without going anywhere at all.
What to Expect from Your Laois Wedding Photographer
Laois is one of the closest counties to Dublin. Portlaoise is just over an hour down the motorway, and even the more remote western parts of the county around Mountrath and Kinnitty are comfortably under ninety minutes. This proximity keeps travel costs minimal and means scheduling is straightforward.
The Midlands climate is generally kind to photographers. Laois gets less rainfall than the western counties, and the Slieve Blooms shelter the lowlands from the worst of the Atlantic weather. Light tends to be softer and more consistent than on the coast, ideal for portraiture. In autumn, the estate grounds at Ballyfin and Castle Durrow are spectacular, with the mature beech and oak trees producing rich golds, coppers, and russets.
