Langton House Hotel, Kilkenny City, A Kilkenny institution for over sixty years, Langton’s sprawling premises include a series of interconnected function rooms, each with its own character. The award-winning garden terrace is one of the finest outdoor reception spaces in the southeast, and the proximity to Kilkenny’s medieval mile means couple portraits can take in the city’s best architecture, from Rothe House to the Tholsel, in a leisurely ten-minute stroll.
Butler House, Kilkenny City, This beautifully restored Georgian townhouse, once part of Kilkenny Castle’s estate, sits in walled gardens with direct views of the castle itself. The interiors are elegant and light-filled, with tall sash windows that produce stunning natural-light portraits. For more intimate weddings of up to 60 guests, Butler House offers a sophistication that is hard to match. The formal gardens, with their geometric box hedging and gravel paths, photograph beautifully in any season.
Mount Juliet Estate, Thomastown, Set on 1,500 acres of parkland along the banks of the River Nore, Mount Juliet is Kilkenny’s grandest venue. The 18th-century house itself is magnificent, but the estate grounds are what truly set it apart for photography, ancient woodland, a walled rose garden, and the riverbank walk where light filters through beech canopy in the most extraordinary way during late afternoon. Where to Take Portraits in Kilkenny
Kilkenny is the best city in Ireland for wedding portraits on foot. From most city venues you can walk to three completely different backdrops in ten minutes, which removes the cars, the parking and the half hour they cost you.
Kilkenny Castle parkland. Fifty acres behind the castle, with a formal rose garden, a lime avenue and a long lawn that gives you the castle from a distance. Free, open until dusk, and right in the middle of town.
The Medieval Mile. The Butter Slip, a narrow covered lane of worn steps between High Street and Kieran Street, is the best five square metres in the city. Rothe House’s courtyards, the Black Abbey and the arched doorways along Parliament Street are all on the same short walk.
St Canice’s Cathedral and the round tower. Thirteenth century cathedral, a ninth century round tower and a graveyard of standing stones at the top of the Mile. The steps up from Irishtown are a frame in themselves.
The Nore. The riverside walk from the castle down past Lacken Weir gives you water, trees and the castle above. Green and quiet, three minutes from the noise.
Jerpoint Abbey, Thomastown. A Cistercian abbey with a carved cloister arcade, fifteen minutes south of the city and five from Mount Juliet. One of the finest medieval ruins in the country and rarely crowded.
Kells Priory. A vast walled monastic site outside Kells village, with towers, a curtain wall and sheep grazing between the ruins. Free, unstaffed, open at all hours, and completely extraordinary. Twenty minutes from the city and my first recommendation to anyone with time for one stop.
Inistioge. A village green with limes around it, an eighteenth century bridge over the Nore, and Woodstock Gardens on the hill above with its avenues of monkey puzzle and noble fir. Half an hour from the city and worth it.
What to Expect from Your Kilkenny Wedding Photographer
Kilkenny is approximately 90 minutes from Dublin on the M9, making it one of the most accessible wedding destinations outside the capital. For city-centre weddings, I can comfortably travel on the morning of the day. For estate venues like Mount Juliet, I’ll typically arrive the evening before to walk the grounds and finalise portrait locations.
The southeast of Ireland enjoys some of the country’s best weather statistics, Kilkenny sits in a relative rain shadow and records higher sunshine hours than the national average. This is a genuine advantage for wedding photography. That said, I plan for all conditions, and the abundance of covered walkways, stone archways, and sheltered courtyards across Kilkenny’s venues means that rain rarely limits our options.
Golden hour in Kilkenny falls beautifully across the castle grounds and along the Nore, particularly from May through September. The river acts as a natural reflector, bouncing warm light upward and creating the kind of even, flattering illumination that portrait photographers spend careers chasing.
